It was in 1827 that the champagne House was formally established in Rheims. To ensure its champagnes were of the highest quality, the House of G.H. Mumm quickly decided on an unusual supply strategy – buying grapes directly from growers in the best areas, rather than buying grape juice or must.

Mumm to control the quality of its grapes, in line with the House policy of demanding "only the best" or "everything available from the best crus". The other advantage of these direct links with the growers was that they allowed the House of G.H. Mumm to oversee one of the most vital stages in the making of champagne: pressing the grapes.

In 1852, Georges Hermann de Mumm, son of one of the founders, took control of the champagne House, renaming it G.H. Mumm & Co.   top page

His first move was to build brand new cellars and facilities better suited to the needs of the champagne trade of the time. An open-minded advocate of greater social freedom, he devised a bonus system and an accident and injury allowance to help male and female employees with over five years’ service in the industry, supporting them according to their age or infirmity. On 16 November 1876, Georges Hermann Mumm registered the “Cordon Rouge” name with the legal Visit Champagne cellars G.H. In 1927, the House of G.H.Mumm played a role in creating the official champagne appellation and defining the approved grape-growing and vinification methods G.H Mumm today ranks as the third-largest champagne producer in the world.
